SELCO is actively leading the project origination of the energy transition in the tobacco industry of Sub Saharan Africa. Through the National Designated Authority (NDA) Zambia Office under the Ministry of Green Economy & Environment (MGEE); we have requested for significant funding from the Green Climate Fund (GCF) to conduct the energy transitional activities of the project.
The project is to promote the production of the rice crop in or near the tobacco growing areas in Zambia, in order to use rice husks, as a by-product of rice milling to be used as an alternative non-wood flue-curing fuel in the tobacco industry.
This energy transition initiative will help to mitigate GHG emissions in the tobacco-related agricultural sector of Sub Saharan Africa and will in-turn eventually reduce the deforestation induced by the tobacco industry.
